My Hero Project : Richard Travis (Dickson Savage)


Dickson Savage was born in 6/4/1881 and in 1912 he changes his name from Dickson Savage to Richard Travis. 

Then in 1914 he enlists with Otago Mounted Rifles, in 1915 he fights in gallipoli and in 1916 he transfers to Otago Infantry Regiment, receives DCM and made sergeant.

In 1917, he fought in the battle of Messines and helped troops find and kill 30 Germans hiding in a barn and also fought in the battle of St Ives. In 1918 he got three more medals : a Belgian Croix de Guerre as the unit's most deserving soldier and a Military Medal and a Victoria Cross on july 24th, but died on the 25th in a bombing raid.

  1. Thank you Jacob for introducing me to Dickson Savage. I am always amazed at the bravery show and sacrifices that are made by some people. It is very important to remember them. Can you think of ways that war can be prevented in the future? I look forward to your next blog post.

  2. Mr Robertson is right. Brave soldiers like Dickson Savage don't start wars - but end up having to do the fighting in order to win wars. Who or what do you think starts wars?
